Song of the Day - Day 66

Today's song is...

Your Racist Friend

Never one of my favorites but I like the horn solo. And more and more lately, I have found this lyric coming to mind: "My head can't tolerate this bobbing and pretending, listen to some bullet-head and the madness that he's saying." Unlike a lot of TMBG songs, I feel like there is something very true about this one. It describes a very relatable situation. With horns.

  1. Ooh, maybe my Flood fave. My only quibble is that the harmonies in thirds get a bit, well, relentless by the end of the song. But that's a minor complaint in otherwise unspoilt Flansy goodness. "Can't shake the devil's hand and say you're only kidding." Damn right.

  2. One of my first favorites. I don't love it as much now, but to hear it every now and then is great. I like the harmonies a lot.

  3. This song has become among my Flood favorites too. Interestingly, it was not a favorite of mine in 1990. It actually made little impression on me. As I began to re-discover TMBG and re-acquire the old albums (you know, on those newfangled CDs), however, Your Racist Friend was probably the one song that I noticed feeling markedly different about. I've really come to enjoy it over the past couple of years. I dare say it may be just below Letterbox as my favorite Flood tune, but I'm really _so_ bad at picking favorites.

  4. Like rsreale said, when I first started listening to Flood I didn't like this song at all, but it's definitely grown on me. I really like hearing it live. There's something about it that makes it fun to jump around to. I don't think I've ever seen Flans NOT mess up the lyrics on stage, though.
