Song of the Day - Day 859

New song = new song of the day!

Meh (They Could Try Harder)

How cute is that little monster, right?! I have to admit that Flansburgh's pronunciation of "meh" (too much "ah" not enough "eh") bugs me a little, but how can you not love a song with the lyric "cheer up, sucker"? The melody is super catchy and makes me bop my head just like the little monster. And were it not sold out, I just might have been tempted to buy that bag of mystery stuff.

Song of the Day - Day 858

The band has released a new song! You know what that means?!!!

For one day only, Song of the Day is BACK!!

Today's song is...

100 Cars For Good

Okay, so it's an ad and as presented in this video, it is pretty repetitive. But the animation is really cute and the tune is surprisingly catchy. It's not gonna make any Top 25 lists, but hey, NEW SONG, right?! Woot!

Song of the Day - Day 857

Today's song is...

Didn't Kill Me

There is something so perfect about Nanobots ending on the lyric "the end." And on a song that sounds like classic Dial-A-Song era TMBG.

And, I suppose it also makes a nice ending point for this Song of the Day project I have been working on for over two years now. It seems strange that this will no longer be part of my daily routine. I'd like to thank those of you who have stuck with me on a daily basis to read my musings on TMBG's immense catalog. Though this is the last song on a list that seemed like it would never run out, I do have one final post prepared for tomorrow. It's a repeat song, but the only one I've never gotten the opportunity to share my own thoughts on. And I promise, I will revive the list for any future releases TMBG produces.

Song of the Day - Day 856

Today's song is...

Too Tall Girl

It happened slowly, but I am totally in love with this song. Like head over heels. The instrumentation is fantastic. There are so many little delightful things buried in the music, from the little bits of percussion to the clarinet, to the bass drum, to the beautiful vibraphone. And the lyrics are so whimsical. It's almost a love song. Maybe a bit of a silly one, but a love song nonetheless. Packed with interesting vocabulary words and one of the most delightful rhymes I've heard: "Knows more etiquette than Connecticut." I wouldn't even have said it a week ago, but now, this is hand down my favorite Flans song on Nanobots. It delights me. There is just no better word for it. It is delightful.

Song of the Day - Day 855

Today's song is...

Icky

Here is a perfect example of a song that I was indifferent to on first listen, but has grown on me a lot over the last few weeks. It was all the lyrics about slacks that finally drew me in. Cause really, how can you go wrong with a song about pants? And I was just tickled at the idea of the guy only returning one slack. Because it raises the excellent question: why are they called a pair of slacks anyway? It is only one thing. I enjoy the contradiction too, of the primary character being described as "icky" and not really a great guy, but also someone everyone wants to know and be friends with. Also, I must admit, I totally didn't get the "first name: getting all up in you, last name: face" lyric, until I saw it written down.

Excellent use of accordion here too, but what I really noticed was the great bass line. This might just be my favorite bass line on the album. Personally, I think this would be a fun one for them to adapt for live performance, but maybe it wouldn't come across as well as I feel like it would. I'd sure like the chance to find out though.

Song of the Day - Day 854

Today's song is...

Stuff Is Way

Huh? I actually really enjoy the percussion on this one, but I just can't get past the complete nonsense of the lyrics. It just sounds like gibberish. I want to like it. I really do. But I just can't figure out why I should. If someone can offer me any insight that would help, I'd gladly accept it. Cause otherwise I am just scratching my head.

Song of the Day - Day 853

Today's song is...

Great

I was very confused about what is going on in this song, until I realized I was mishearing the final word. And then it made a lot more sense. Until I realized that my "correct" lyric was still not what the wiki claims to be the lyric. So I'll put it up for the readers to decide. I originally couldn't tell if the final line was "I'm going downtown to get new stuff" or "you stuff." But then I thought I was totally wrong and it was "to get you stopped." I figured that one made more sense. Dave is getting scammed, but he pulls a fast one on the scammer, running away with the $200 to tattle on the guy who tried to cheat him. But the wiki has the lyric as "to get used up." Which again, doesn't make any sense to me. I know none of these are "official lyrics" since there is no lyric sheet with the album, but what is popular opinion on what people are hearing?

Also, I enjoy this guitar part.

Song of the Day - Day 852

Today's song is...

The Darlings Of Lumberland

From early comments made about album 16, when it was still in production, this was the song I was most intrigued to hear. The comments Flans made about it made it sound really interesting. And it is. But not quite in the way I expected. I found the lyrics to be not at all what I expected, and I am not entirely enamored of them. I tend to shy away from the really creepy, grim stuff. On the other hand, the horn arrangement on this song is fricking phenomenal. Totally exceeded expectations. So many interwoven sounds and textures, and the variety of instruments, never quite completely blending together. I feel like every time I listen to it, I hear something new in the horn part, form the very high flute, down to the very low clarinet. Between this and Cloisonné, I believe Stan Harrison has proved himself to be a master at composing unique and engaging horn parts. I was so pleased to see the band gave him a writing credit on this one. It was highly deserved.

Song of the Day - Day 851

Today's song is...

Replicant

My impression of this song changed after I read some of Linnell's interview comments about Nanobots having an underlying theme about having kids. On the one hand, it has a creepy science fiction quality to it, related to cloning. On the other hand, I can see the references to having kids in here too. I quite like the etherial pings and dings of the bell music here. But my favorite part about this song is the bass line. It's pretty damn cool.

Song of the Day - Day 850

Today's song is...

Tick

Heeheehee. This song begs to be sung along with. It's rather goofy. And raises so many questions! What tick? What did it do? And what predicament are the narrators in? We'll never know!

Song of the Day - Day 849

Today's song is...

There

This one also feels very theatrical. And also very Fingertips-esque. It sounds strange on its own when not sandwiched between Nouns and Insect Hospital. Having all these tiny songs squeezed into the back half of the album makes it fly by very quickly.

Song of the Day - Day 848

Today's song is...

Nouns

My first thought upon hearing this song was School House Rock! I know I said yesterday's song was one of my favorites, but I love this one even more. It's so cute! And I totally pegged the reference to running out of nouns to write songs about, so I was happy to see that confirmed in interview. This is just begging for an adorably animated video. Some computer artist fan should get on that.

Song of the Day - Day 139 Revisted

Today's song is... (once again)

Birdhouse In Your Soul

Those of you who have been reading these posts for a long time, might remember that on my first birthday after I started Song Of The Day, my dear friend Megan gave me a vacation for a day and selected Birdhouse as my very own birthday song. Though it was a logical choice, given the name of this blog, I've never quite felt I was worthy of the honor. But more importantly, I was away from home when it was posted and so busy that week that I never got a chance to reply with my own comments. I always meant to go back and there has even been a post on the song sitting in drafts for probably close to two years now. But eventually, it just seemed like too much time had passed and it was no longer relevant. But I can not allow Song of the Day to pass into the night without sharing my thoughts on this most monumental of songs. So I hope you will forgive me this repeat post, and consider this a form of closure for dear old SOTD.

Birdhouse is not my favorite song. It's my second, if we are being specific. But it is what I would consider to be THE perfect TMBG song. It has all the elements that I love about their music: insanely catchy melody, amusing and unlikely subject matter handled in a serious way, cryptic and beautiful lyrics, and it stands up to repeated listenings better than pretty much any other song. Birdhouse has quite literally become the background music of my daily life. It is my alarm that wakes me up in the morning, my ringtone when anyone calls me. Its lyrics are not only the name of this blog, but also my email address and my identity on nearly every online site that requires a user name. Blue Canary has become a second identity for me, so much so that I often run into people at shows who know me only by that name. Not to mention, that every time I look down, there is a reminder right there on my wrist.

image

Truth be told, I hear Birdhouse so often, or snatches of it anyway, that sometimes I forget to really listen to it as a song. But then, every so often, I step back and let it really sink in and can still feel my heart swell up with love for just how good a song it is, from start to finish. The rhythm and keyboard measure just after the first lyrics is probably one of my favorite musical phrases in all of music. It's almost like a drum roll for what it about to come. And the melody of the song is just so damn happy. You just can't be sad listening to Birdhouse. The song commands you to pogo, bop your head, tap your feet and enjoy what a really happy song can do for your soul. I adore the bass line that comes through much more in the recorded version than it does live, and the trumpet solo that blares out in celebration.

And then there are the lyrics. You might think that a song sung from the perspective of a blue canary nightlight would be cutesy and childish, but John Linnell is enough of a genius that he manages to make it beautiful and introspective. The nightlight just wants to be your friend. It spends its days watching over you and wants to be as important to you, as you are to it. The light is introspective, considering its ancestry and its purpose in life, and really how could you not make room in your soul for such a charming little bird.

As much as I love the recorded version of Birdhouse, it doesn't hold a candle to the experience of hearing it live. With those iconic cymbal beats (played at every soundcheck ever to test the cymbal), that ring like an announcement that something wonderful is coming, the beginning of Birdhouse at a show is the moment at which even an already enthusiastic crowd goes absolutely wild. It's the song that even your friend who only came along because the ticket was free can't help but sing along to. As the drum beats thrum into the main body of the song, the audience starts head banging, followed by the most energetic pogoing you are likely to see. And I challenge you not to feel connected to every single human being in the room, as you scream out "who watches over you!" I remember standing at a show in Pittsburgh several years ago, and watching the energy level of the crowd explode as this song was played, and wishing desperately, that every single person who had every questioned why I spend so much of my time and money going to all these shows, could be in that room so that I could say, "See this? This is why."

For me, Birdhouse has gone beyond being a simple song. The tattoo on my wrist represents so many things. The blue canary, that has become part of my identity. The song that can always make me happy. The lyric, that is my most favorite in all the catalog. "Bluebird of friendliness, like guardian angels it's always near." But most importantly, it is a way to keep the band close to me. To remind me that no matter where life takes me, no matter how bad things get, this band and its music are always near to lift me up and make me feel at home. Watching over me, so to speak. For I truly have made that birdhouse in my soul, not just for the little blue canary nightlight, or even the song that contains him, but for the band that brought him to me. They have changed my life in ways I couldn't even begin to number, bringing people and places and experiences into it that I never would have had without them. And the music. Always the music.

It has been my great pleasure to share that music with you all over the last few years, through Song of the Day. I'd like to thank each and every one of you who ever read one of these posts, for reading, following along, sharing your thoughts and listening to mine. As fellow TMBG fans, we all share a unique bond found in the love of something which is greater than all of us, and yet would not be possible without us. Because what good is music, if there is no one there to hear it, appreciate it, share it, love it, and let it into our very souls? Thank you all coming along on this journey with me. Though this project is done, I hope I can continue to share my passion for this band with you, in whatever format I find next, for many more years to come.

Now, if you'll all join me, stop what you're doing, turn up the speakers, sing at the top of your lungs and let's dance!

Song of the Day - 847

Today's song is...

Decision Makers

So much drama in such a tiny little song. It seems very theatrical, what with the orchestral music (even if it is just sampled, as I imagine it is) and the big powerful vocal (which I love, btw). And most especially, the way the music ends before the vocal. I know this one is short and a non-John vocal, but it's still one of my favorites on the album.

Song of the Day - Day 846

Today's song is...

9 Secret Steps

This song is kind of a mystery to me. I usually don't get too fused about not "getting" a song, especially if it seems to just be non-sensical. But in cases where I feel like I am actually missing something, songs can sometimes drive me a little crazy. And this would be one of those cases. I just don't get it. But I do like all the rhymes in the lyrics. There are some creative ones. And the backing vocals are pretty interesting. Plus, you can go wrong with a good train groove drum rhythm. So I guess those things kind of make up for the mind boggling lyrics.

Song of the Day - Day 845

Today's song is...

Destroy The Past

Of all the short little songs on Nanobots, this is the one that most reminds me of a Fingertips snippet. It just sounds like it would fit into that song set seamlessly. It is also, probably the one I would be most interested in hearing turned into a longer song. And it was the first song on the album that my brain started anticipating as soon as the previous song was over. It usually takes a while for that kind of auto-memory to set in, but not in this case.

Song of the Day - Day 844

Today's song is...

Sometimes A Lonely Way

I find this song quite pretty and sad. The arrangement is wonderful with the keyboard, accordion, bass and bongos. Yay, bongos! (You all know my fondness for Marty playing bongos by now right?) I also like the "bah, bah, bah, bah" backing vocals which compliment the tone of the lyrics well. The song feels like it's about self realization and starting over alone. Though the Jumbotron and trophy references always make me think about sports too. Flans has a knack for the sad ballad. If they were looking to add a new slow song into their live set, I think this would be a contender. But only if they bring the bongos ;-)

Song of the Day - Day 843

Today's song is...

Stone Cold Coup D'État

I admit that I am not as enamored of this song as most people I talk to seem to be. It's not that I don't like it, because I do, but several of my acquaintances are going ga-ga over it and I've even heard a few people say it is their favorite song on the album. I'll totally concede that it is one of the stronger tracks and one of the more traditional rock songs. I just wouldn't rank it so highly compared with other songs on the album. I really enjoy the word play in the lyrics. And it has a great bass part and drum/percussion part. Heck, there are even some awesome guitar riffs in there. But I can't help but be disturbed by the verse about the kids plotting to kill their parents. I know I shouldn't be as a) it's just a song, and b) it is hardly the first time a TMBG song has referenced killing one's parents. But I just find it unsettling enough that it affects my enjoyment of the song. I think maybe if that verse wasn't there, I would totally love it. Because I find most of the other lyrics fantastic. I'll probably get over it sooner or later. And I still hope this is one of the ones they pick to play live, because I think it is well suited to live performance. *crosses fingers*

Song of the Day - Day 842

Today's song is...

Sleep

There is kind of a fantastical element to this song. But then again maybe not? Maybe it is just describing  someone with a weird relationship to sleep. Either way, it is an interesting song. The honking noise really punctuates the lyrics. I was rather expecting it to be longer than it ended up being. I guess I haven't really made up my mind about this one yet, but the lyrics are definitely interesting.

Song of the Day - Day 841

Today's song is...

Tesla

I was initially very excited about the idea of a song about Tesla, and ended up a bit disappointed. I think I was expecting a big rocker like James K. Polk or even Meet James Ensor. But Tesla is slow and lacking in any particularly catchy phrases in the melody. While loaded with facts, I find the repetition in many of them being delivered in the same phrase, "ushered the...," tiring. I was compelled to do some research into why Tesla had x-rays of Mark Twains skull and did find the answer interesting. I hadn't even realized they were contemporaries. I am very curious to hear what it sounds like live. But unlike, what I imagine would be the case with, most of the other songs on the album, I was not especially crushed that they premiered this one while I wasn't there. Which probably says more about my interest in the song that anything else. Maybe if it hadn't been so different from what I was expecting, it would have faired better in my affections.
