Song of the Day - Day 119

Today's song is...

Sensurround

For several years I listened to people complain that the version of this song released on the EP wasn't as good as the one the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers soundtrack without knowing what they were talking about. Then I finally heard that version, and wow, I totally know what all those people meant now.

Fantastic, super lively track. This definitely goes on my list of feel good TMBG tunes. And I LOVE the guitar part which I don't say very often. It's not usually the thing I notice. I also really like the rhythmic pattern of the lyrics. I do have to admit, with some shame though, that for some reason when this song starts on the CD player I always mistake it for Thunderbird for the first few bars, no matter how many times I hear it. Not exactly sure why I get the openings so confused. Don't tell anyone, OK?

  1. I feel a little deprived and/or out of the loop because I don't think I've ever heard this song...

  2. When I think about what makes TMBG different from other bands, one thing that springs to mind is the subject matter of their songs. This is a great example. And the way the chorus migrates from the short version to the extended version is really smooth. Just a great song.

  3. I really, really love this song and am more than a little jealous that John gets to have it be his birthday's song of the day. :-P :-) Especially after Doctor Worm late last night. Sheesh!

Ever since I discovered this song, I have wanted to see the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie just to see how the hell a song about Sensurround fits in. I can't imagine that the lyrics have anything to do with the movie. I have the S-E-X-X-Y EP and actually wasn't all that disappointed with the version of Sensurround on it. It is less different than I had expected (and also good), though I definitely prefer the MMPR version, mostly for the tempo and bridge.

I'm thinking I need to design a maternity shirt to wear at the Toronto show based on the lyrics of this song... but have been uninspired as yet. Anyone have any good ideas?
