I was excited to see this one pop up.
Today's Song of the Day is....
We Live in a Dump
I should make some sort of joke about this song being about my apartment, as I often feel like I live in a dump, but anyway. This is a song that I was initially ambivalent to and it grew on me over time. Now it's a song I adore but I don't think I ever remember to mention that fact. I think it's probably the most album worthy song on Cast Your Pod. For some reason, I particularly like the last few notes on the keyboard that end out the song. And it's a ton of fun live :-)

Love this song. The first time I heard it live was in Asheville -- remember when Flans announced it and the woman next to us went absolutely nuts? It is a prime "look at Dan's face!" song thanks to the "ba ba ba da da"s, and it cracks me up when Danny sings along too even though he doesn't have a mic. I'm really glad they've been playing it so much lately.
ReplyDeleteIt's a whole-family favorite. My oldest made it his t-shirt: https://files.me.com/jreale/fw026n . And one of their better videos as well.
ReplyDeleteYes, a family favorite here! Love hearing my two-year-old mumble-sing "Our friends are all nuts. And half of them drunks." And I think the video may be permanently burned into my computer screen; the kids have watched it over and over, the little one invariably declaring: "Fall down!" at the end.
ReplyDeletePlus the video reminds me of home -- chaos, noise, and contraptions (our second child is a would-be inventor).
Oh, the video! I forgot about the video. And it was my new favorite thing when it got posted. How could I forget? That little sock puppet dog thing is adorable. I would totally buy one if they ever made it into a stuffed animal.
ReplyDeleteAnd Megan, yes, I remember the woman in Asheville. I also remember her talking to the people next to her about the song before the show started. She REALLY loved it. I remember thinking as Flans was introducing it, but before he had actually said what it was, "Man, that woman next to us is going to FREAK OUT when she realizes they are going to play her song." And then she did.
This was the first song I heard on Dial-A-Song. Or the demo, or early version. I do like the podcast version a bit more than the Cast Your Pod Into the Wind one, and I like the song live even better than both of those.
ReplyDeleteAnd the last few notes are priceless, of course. :D
I love the story of the woman in Asheville. Haha.
ReplyDeleteAnother favorite! And the first time I ever heard this song was live at the only show I've been to! I love the melody, the energy, those last few notes, and the goofiness. I love the "ba ba ba da da"s and the lyrics "why be realistic? / Don't wake me from my dream / I was individualistic / They kicked me off the team". And the video is splendid. :)
"making plans the kind that go awry" I use that a lot.
