I am never quite sure how I feel about this song. It is a perfect example of a song that was almost ruined for me by reading other people's interpretations. My instinct, as it usually is, is to take the lyrics quite literally (which I realize is probably pretty naïve on this song in particular). But I read several interpretations of it and suddenly that was all I could think about when I listened. I think it particularly bothers me on this song because I can't decide if I agree with any of the interpretations or not. Basically, the song kind of baffles me, I guess. But I like the music.

I can't interpret this song. I wasn't sure I liked it, but it's kind of hopelessly interesting to the ear. No memories tied to it. Never a complete favorite.
ReplyDeleteI try to minimize interpretation and just enjoy. This song is not a favorite of mine; it would probably rank low average on my list. I do kind of like that it's at least loosely about sex, though, as that's not a usual theme for TMBG. Intriguing departure. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis was the first song I heard when listening to the present you sent me. I picked out Factory Showroom to listen to first, and of course it's the first song, so I listened to it while driving home after work and I distinctly remember hearing the line "there she is / standing on the bed / cookie in one hand, wig on her head / s-e-x-x-y" while at a stoplight by Pizza Hut and laughing. And I still grin every time I hear that line.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure how to feel about the song as a whole at first, though, and maybe I'm still not sure. I do like it, although it's not one of my favorites.
It does have a nice little beat and I like what Erin said about it being "kind of hopelessly interesting to the ear".
I could probably do without the last verse -- I just have no feeling about it one way or another, really. But I quite like every other lyric.
As for interpretations, this is one I've always taken very literally and I thankfully haven't read anything to the contrary to ruin the song for me.
I know I've tried to express in the past that I don't take TMBG songs literally or figuartively as a whole rather than taking each song as I hear it and applying a meaning (whether literal or figurative) in my own way, but I'll say it again and again because I feel it's important that if I say I think a certain song is literal or figurative in my mind that it doesn't necessarily mean I find all of their songs to be that way. And even my mood and experiences play a role in how I interpret a particular song when I'm listening to it. But S-E-X-X-Y is one of those I've never thought of as anything but literal. Not to say that there's nothing else to it or that it can't be taken in other ways or have metaphors. To each his own. But this one I, personally, just choose to take literally.
