I have decided to go forward with this Song of the Day idea. Here is my plan. To ensure complete randomness, I am going to click on the random page thing on the wiki until I get a song. That shall be the song of the day (unless I decide to pick something particular in honor of a holiday or something of that nature). I'll share a few of my thoughts in the post. You can post whatever thoughts come to mind in the comments. With any luck, some interesting discussions will emerge.

Disappointing Show
Ok, I laughed a little when that was the first song that came up. I think when I first heard this song, I was like "what the hell is this?" and dismissed it for quite a while afterward. Now, I have a lot more appreciation for it because I can so easily picture the circumstances under which it was performed. I love the humor and spontaneity of it, and even more so that such an off the cuff little tune made it into somewhat mainstream circulation. And while I certainly wasn't at that show, I have been at "that" show if you know what I mean and I can so recognize that moment of "oh wow, this show is so fucked" when the frustration devolves into lunacy. I especially love the band intros in the middle. And I only just noticed that the wiki page compares the song to the This American Life segment Fiasco which is pretty much my favorite TAL piece they have ever done. Good job, whoever made that connection :-)

ReplyDeleteAs I was typing my comment on your last post, I was listening to... I can't remember the podcast*, but it had this on it. Coincidence!
"On the drums, Mr. Joseph Stalin on the drums, man. Some other guy on the bass. Check him out." <-- I am contemplating changing my babel box on the wiki to say that this is my favorite lyric. I don't have a particular memory linked to this song, other than my first time listening to They Got Lost-- I actually laughed aloud when I heard this line.
Also, to testify to technical difficulties... I think each of my shows had some minor moment. We can say Port Washington was the Flans guitar-then-mic fail... first 2 seconds of Damn Good Times played for about a minute. I will forever cherish that moment.

I love this song. Love love love. And I've been at "those" shows too, and I really wish Flansburgh would launch into a rendition of this rather than, say, glaring at the audience and refusing to sing the bridge to Ana Ng or something.

Aw, I really like this song. :D When they mess up somewhere and actually acknowledge it instead of just ignoring it, it makes the show seem more real... to me, anyway.

I have to say, I think your blog (and Megan's!) is the reason I have even a smidgen of understanding of that. You do such a wonderful job of reviewing shows and when I'm finished reading them I feel as though I've been to those shows. So even though I actually HAVEN'T been to one of "those shows", I feel as though I can appreciate this song because I've sort of experienced them vicariously through you. :)
It was actually a great show, and if you listen closely you can hear me shout "we're not disappointed!" at about :18. I mean, seriously.. how could anyone be disappointed with a show in which this happened. Three times!
