As promised here is my playlist, with video links. They aren't in any particular order and they aren't necessarily my favorite songs by these artists. Particularly, this was not the Dave Mallett song I wanted to include but I wanted one with a video and there were very few. Kudos to anyone who actually makes it through this list. It is way longer than I intended. I got carried away. Maybe I should have bolded all the ones I really care about.

Here's my list that I shared earlier. No links yet, but I can make any of these available if anyone has trouble finding. I really love all of these songs, and these were probably the most representative of the sort of stuff I listen to right now that could fit on a 90-minute cassette :-) . I _can't wait_ to give other people's choices a listen over the next couple of days.
ReplyDelete"Secrets" Mission of Burma 1982
"Inconsolable" Jonatha Brooke & The Story 1995
"Eternal Life" Jeff Buckley 1994
"Pink Light" Laura Veirs & Saltbreakers 2007
"Vito's Ordination Song (Acoustic Version)" Sufjan Stevens 2003
"Here's Where the Story Ends" The Sundays 1990
"Last Parade" Matthew Good 2009
"Memorize the City" The Organ 2004
"The Drop-Off" The Tragically Hip 2006
"Crawl" The Wedding Present 1990
"Stromata" Charlotte Martin 2006
"Goodnight I Say" Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians 1985
"Stratford-on-Guy" Liz Phair 1993
"Hundred Hearts" The Swimmers 2009
"Get Him Back" Fiona Apple 2005
"Max Ernst's Dream" Mission of Burma 2004
"Another Plane Went Down" Shawn Colvin 2001
"Galaxy of Emptiness" Beth Orton 1996
Kelly, honestly, I don't know if we have any significant overlap except for the YMB Giants :-) . But based on some of the things I saw on your list, I want to suggest giving a listen to The Temptations if you haven't heard that much of them already. Not that I personally know much beyond the hits, but they had a LOT of hits, mostly excellent or better :-) .
ReplyDeleteHastily thrown together. Bonus points because Cake's lead singer sings backup on "Fred Jones Part 2," and Ben Folds does backup vocals on "Oasis."
ReplyDeleteI put a Ben Folds and a Ben Folds Five song because they're very distinct from each other lyrically and musically.
16 Military Wives - The Decemberists
Dear John - I Monster
Shop Vac - Jonathan Coulton
Schizophrenia - Jukebox the Ghost
Mutiny, I Promise You - The New Pornographers
This Year - The Mountain Goats
Daylight - Matt & Kim
The House Wins - OK Go
A Day In The Life - The Beatles
Oasis - Amanda Palmer
Fred Jones Part 2 - Ben Folds
Undone (The Sweater Song) - Weezer
Hotel Song - Regina Spektor
Bullet - Steel Train
Casimir Pulaski Day - Sufjan Stevens
Steven's Last Night In Town - Ben Folds Five
Kelly, I love a lot of those songs. "Baba O'Riley" was my favorite song ever before I discovered TMBG. And "God Only Knows" has been my wedding song for like twelve years. I don't care if my future husband hates it, we're getting married to it and he can deal.
ReplyDeleteJohn, I've heard of several of those bands but I've never really listened to their stuff, so I'm excited to wade through it when I have time.
Erin, you and I have a TON of overlap. Awesome.
Gahhh okay this is hard to do without repeating bands because I am a total creature of habit, but here:
Palmcorder Yajna - The Mountain Goats
Everyday I Write The Book - Elvis Costello
Janie Jones - The Clash
Schizophrenia - Jukebox the Ghost
I Don't Want to Die (In The Hospital) - Conor Oberst
Victoria - The Kinks
I Feel Fine - The Beatles
Bittersweet Bundle of Misery - Graham Coxon
Going Underground - The Jam
He's Not A Boy - The Like
What Goes On - The Velvet Underground
Tango Til' They're Sore - Tom Waits
Baby Driver - Simon & Garfunkel
Someday, Someway - Marshall Crenshaw
Age Of Consent - New Order
Maybelline - Chuck Berry
Ain't Too Proud To Beg - The Temptations
Begin The Beguine - Ella Fitzgerald
We both picked Schizophrenia, hahaha. I also love Elvis Costello. Love your playlist, Megan. But everybody else, you make me want to listen to new music. So that's good.
ReplyDeleteI finally got to go through every one of these songs! Of course, a lot of Kelly's list I got to hear when it was all new during the golden age of FM radio in the backseat of my parents' car, or on the record player. I'm surprised how much the 70s station on Sirius satellite radio can instantly transport me back in time there, and it helps me remember it was a pretty mixed bag. Sometimes you got Sabbath or Zeppelin, other times you got Bread or America. Of your older choices, I can't argue with Queen or The Who. And I suppose XTC is more old than modern as well. So far, I'm not getting a strong vibe off of either Jonathan Coulton (but I'll try some more, because enough people I respect really like him) or The Guggenheim Grotto (but they seemed promising, so I'll listen to some other tracks), but MGMT have an almost instant likability to them.
ReplyDeleteReaction to Erin's list: I guess I'm pretty indifferent to OK Go as well. I have yet to hear anything from The New Pornographers that I don't like, so it's time to buy an album or two. The Mountain Goats sound really strong, and I want to hear more. The unstyled vocal style reminds me a lot of The Thermals (actually, after typing that, I got nervous that maybe it was the same guy, so I googled and found this which struck me as funny: http://www.soundaslanguage.com/2006/11/08/the-thermals/ .) And Ben Folds is a really talented guy with a great voice.
Megan's list was a lot more familiar to me. The Kinks and The Jam and New Order are great. People look at me like I'm a leper when I tell them I don't really care for Tom Waits or Elvis Costello, but I'm not gonna fake it. Another great Mountain Goats song! Looks like there are gonna be two new album purchases in my immediate future. And I just want to say I'm in awe of the staying power of Maybelline and Ain't Too Proud To Beg. These are perfect exemplars of the irrepressibility of rock/blues/soul.
I don't know what it is exactly, but current music seems more interesting now than it has seemed in a while to me. Looking at my list and yours (plural), I'm thinking the only thing on mine that I'd have any confidence you might like would be The Swimmers (you can download here: files.me.com/jreale/gr2xva.mp3 ). And Sufjan. If I were trying to skew my list more modern, The Editors and Metric would have been on there somewhere too, maybe Sleigh Bells, Maybe Silversun Pickups, but I stand by my list as summing up of the stuff that currently bounces around my head the most (sans TMBG of course).
