Today's song is...
Pet Name
Today is my dear friend and Road Crew partner in crime, Megan's, birthday. Therefore today's song of the day is her favorite song in the catalog. So after you have finished wishing her a happy birthday, turn off all the lights, sit alone in the dark room and listen to Pet Name in the manner in which it was intended, in her honor.
I can't say this is my favorite song, or that it would even make my top 50, but I do have quite a lot of affection for the bass and keyboard parts and it all comes together quite nicely. And I have fond memories of listening to it live in the total darkness of LPR (not so much at Mohegan Sun, since there was too much ambient light coming in from the casino ).
I think somehow this song speaks to why Megan and I compliment each other so well as fans, the Flans-girl and the Linnell-girl meet in the middle with a mutual appreciation of the entire body of work. And we don't have to fight over the guys in the car on the way back to the hotel.
Happy Birthday, Megan!!

Happy birthday, Megan! Enjoy your special song of the day! This one's not among my top favorites, though it is one that's clearly grown on me over time. And it does make my TMBG Faves playlist (which means it's currently at least in the top 216). I'm turning in early tonight (as in right after I post this comment), but will play this song in my darkened bedroom before falling asleep in tribute to your birthday. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am feverish and sick and not all there so when I saw that this was the song of the day I was all "holy crap, what a coincidence because it is also my birthday!" and then I read it and I got a little weepy because awww!
ReplyDeleteYes, this is my absolute favorite TMBG song. I discovered it during a month-long roadtrip across the United States -- we were in Southern California and I'd just gotten back from my first show, and for some reason I fell in love with this song on the plane back to Los Angeles. We listened to it at least twice a day in the car because I thought it was so beautiful. I listen to it when I'm sad, mostly, but sometimes I listen to it when I'm feeling normal too. There is (of course) a dumb personal reason that I love this so much and I won't go into it here, but "you said love was just a lie but I could tell that you were lying and we almost figured out how we'd get along and given time we'll find it strange to be alone" are ridiculously beautiful to me and now I have to go sit in a dark room and listen to Pet Name for a while. Hooray!
Happy birthday Megan!
ReplyDeleteIt is a beautiful song; one of my Flans favorites. I think it sort of hit me when, at some point during the summer; I was driving home with a friend from being out in the eastern part of Long Island, and we played Factory Showroom on the way home. It's not even my favorite album. But it was that weird warm summer night and getting lost (although he had a GPS) and then driving home singing Pet Name... I dunno. I'm getting on a tangent here. But that was a good memory with the song.
Megan our Pet Name stories have to do with transportation.
I am not feverish or sick but one could argue that I'm not all there, because I also thought "what a coincidence!" when I read the title and first sentence. I knew Megan's birthday was sometime this week, and I thought it just happened to fall on the day that song of the day was Pet Name. Anyway, good song choice. :] And I really like what you said in the last bit of your entry about how you compliment each other so well as fans. Happy belated birthday, Megan! :)
ReplyDeleteIs there any specific reason why they play this song in the dark at shows? Just curious.
I don't have anything very interesting to add. I really like this song. It's one of those that didn't immediately jump out at me when I first listened to Factory Showroom. There were several on that album I absolutely loved from first listen and I spent more time listening to them. But when I did play it through for a second time, I found this song very lovely and charming, as weird as that may seem. I agree with Erin -- I think it's one my Flans favorites. And the lyrics Megan quoted are really fantastic.
