#16 - Unusual Instruments

When it comes to atypical instruments in rock music, it's more a question of what haven't They used than what they have. Flex-a-tone, Marxaphone, rauschpfeife, euphonium, clarinet, glockenspiel, stylophone, Kaoss Pad, musical saw, harpsichord, melodica, piccolo, gong, whip, harmonica, mandolin, kazoo, cowbell, ukulele, autoharp, celesta, banjo, and possibly my very favorite of all these The Stick. I'm sure there are countless others. I really enjoy that all of these things are used out of a desire to include things that sound cool and find the sound that works best in the song, rather than as just a gimmick. And all these unusual instruments are just one of the many things that makes the band so unique.

I wish I had a picture of Flans with The Stick or Linnell playing cowbell to share but I didn't have my camera with me at the show that included both. So you will have to settle for this stylophone picture.

More Cowbell!!!

  1. I love Linnell and his cowbell. The way he plays it cracks me up every time -- such intense concentration as he beats the cowbell with a stick with gusto. The first time I saw Take Out The Trash live I wasn't expecting it and it cracked me up.

I always get a tiny bit sad when Flans talks about the euphonium and how it's a word we'll never hear again because I play the euphonium and it is perhaps the finest of the brass horns. I'm really glad I've gotten to see Linnell play his clarinet twice and am sort of waiting for a saxophone to make an appearance, though I'm not holding my breath for that one. And The Stick, of course, but again, not holding my breath.

  2. I think you still have a shot at The Stick. It recurs periodically. I have given up hope on the saxophone myself though I would certainly love to see it.

And you have also just reminded me that I do have a picture of Linnell's cowbell; he's just not holding it.

  3. "Fell in the door
And you fell on the floor
With your hand on the knob
    Looking up and abruptly
    Forget what you're thinking
Fire alarms go off in your head you live

In the nightgown of the sullen moon"

That's what I picture Linnell singing to his cowbell when that picture was taken. :]

  4. I remember when Gary rescued that poor cowbell. I also remember the guy asking Curt whether Linnell was coming back out and Curt saying "no, man, he's eating his dinner." WOO, Towson!
